BEST STATES TO SERVE AS AN NYSC MEMBER

It is one thing to successfully complete tertiary education in the

country and it is an entirely different thing to get mobilized for

the not entirely compulsory but very necessary service year

within any state in the country. Prospective Corp members ask

themselves and so many people around them different questions

when it boils down to making the right choice of state to go for

service. Considerations such as the amount corps members are

paid in each state, the level of infrastructure in the state, the

state of insecurity, how commendable the state governments

effort is, the cost of living and surviving on daily basis, availability

of job opportunities after the service year and the distance away

from home.

Every one of these factors to be considered are very

important and I thought it wise to make  the selection process

easier by providing prospective Corp members with a properly

researched list that shows the best states by geo-political zones

to go for the National Youth Service Year.

THE NORTH

At the sight of a mobilization letter that carries a northern state,

Corp members begin to fidget and many are even willing to

outsource and redeploy themselves to an entirely different state

and this is largely due to the current state of insecurity in

northern Nigeria. But this shouldn’t entirely be the case as there

are a few northern states worth giving a try;

  1. NIGER STATE: this is by far the most secure state in northern Nigeria and it also has the best level of power supply in the country due to the presence of the Kainji Dam. Unlike most northern state, Niger state enjoys a better level of security. Niger state does not pay her corps members monthly allowances but pays its corps members 60,000 naira at the end of their service year.

  1. KANO STATE: second on the list is Kano state and although unlike Niger state, Kano state is on the terror watch due to the Boko Haram menace and most recently armed bandits and different groups of gunmen. Kano state is by far one of the best state to serve in the country as corps members welfare is a thing of priority. Corps members are paid 5,000 naira monthly and Kano state is the most industrialized northern state as it boast of large numbers of industries from different sectors. Getting a good job after your service year shouldn’t really be a task.
  2. ABUJA: the federal capital territory even from its name exudes class, opulence and wealth. You could become friends with the second wife of a seating senator or even the first son of the accountant general. Although, Abuja is a very expensive city, food is relatively very cheap and you get to enjoy good infrastructure, power supply and a degree of security due to the heavy presence of the armed forces across the state.

THE EAST

1. ENUGU STATE: if what you want is a state with very low cost of living and you want to survive even without much money, then  Enugu state is for you. Enugu state pays corps members monthly allowances based on your location of service in the state. Those serving in the urban areas are paid just a thousand

naira while those who serve in the rural zones are paid 4,000 naira monthly. The major challenge you could face in this state is water scarcity due to its mountainous topography and terrain.

  1. ANAMBRA STATE: easily the best state to serve in the eastern part of this country. Asides the very homely and hospitable indigenes, Anambra is more like the Lagos of the east. A very busy city but the only challenge could be the IPOB sit at home orders and small thefts in business zones like Onitsha. Anambra is a place you can call home and just so you know, Anambra state pays the highest amount to corps members in monthly allowance as they pay corps members 9,000 naira monthly asides the federal government allowance.

THE  SOUTH

  1. CROSS-RIVER STATE: the people’s paradise as it is fondly called is a place to be if you want to appreciate, beauty, serenity, security, culture, different native delicacies, entertainment and if you enjoy the feminine company search no further as this is home to the fairest of them all. Very few loopholes in governance and the absence of major industries and jobs are the only reasons why you might not want to consider Cross-river state. Cross river state pays a monthly allowance of 3,000 to its corps members.
  2. RIVERS STATE: this state can boast of so many things but sitting top on the list is wealth. This state is a rich state with so many industries and corporations. Getting a job wouldn’t be a challenge here. Although the cost of living in Rivers state is on the high side, it makes up for it by providing you with an enabling environment and if you are not built to absorb stress on daily basis do not consider Lagos state as this state would consume your mental health with stress which emanates mainly from its overpopulation. Even at that, Lagos state makes up for its shortcomings in so many ways. Talking about remuneration, Lagos state pays its Corps members who are serving in state ministries 10,000 naira monthly and those in local government ministries are paid 5,000 naira.

I want to believe this article would go a long way in helping you make the best choice when filling that form for the next batch. GOODLUCK!!!
