What is starlink and how does it stand to impact the Nigerian telecommunication sector
LAUNCH DATE
Although originally set for launch at August 2022 but for unknown reasons was pushed further, U.S Space X’s Starlink satellite internet network should be hitting the Nigerian telecommunication space few months from now.
COUNTRIES STAR LINK TELE COMMUNICATION CAN OPERATE
Starlink began exploring expansion into the African market with
countries like Nigeria, South Africa and Zimbabwe being the first
3 countries for testing.
The Nigerian communication commission (NCC) awarded two
licenses to the company already.
Starlink has over time been able to launch over 2000 satellites
orbiting around our planet and 1500 are in operational orbits
already.
HOW STARLINK WILL IMPROVE INTERNET AVALIABILITY
With this, high-speed internet will availability will be assured
Nigerians living even in the most remote, underdeveloped and
landlocked regions and via estimation, Starlinks is set to cover
over 90% of the country with broadband connectivity by 2025.
Typically, Nigerians access the internet through data bundles
offered by the leading four telecommunication companies (MTN,
Airtel, GLO and 9mobile) and complaints of slow connectivity and
yet expensive data bundles have filled the entire ecosystem.
Starlinks is over 9 times faster compared the regular Nigerian average
data connectivity and this invasion by starlink will encourage
more technological growth and bring in more job opportunities to
the Nigerian work space.
From the banking sector to education, remote and hybrid job
roles, deals between non-Nigerian clients and Nigerian creatives, healthcare, security and even transportation.
The ESTIMATED COST OF STARLINK IN NIGERIA
In his already known fashion, Elon Musk’s Starlink would never come without a cost and in most cases a high cost.
A starlink’s device will be set up in the country for use in less than 30 minutes within two different price range, $599 to $2500 which covers shipping and the monthly data subscription.
